Details
In this design, Raizan provides the viewer with a beautifully subtle and balanced composition. The scene captures the rising full moon as it emerges above the treetops and a pagoda. The scene is awash in softly printed grays executed with a bold woodgrain effect, which provides the impression with a poetic atmosphere. The design reads almost as a watercolor or a sumi-e painting. The sense of light and shadow in this print is an impressive and wonderful example of Shin Hanga executed at its best in this early period of the movement.
Connoisseur's Note
This woodblock print was acquired by Robert O. Muller, the famed Shin Hanga collector, on his trip to Japan in the late 30s, and has never been framed or displayed. The print’s colors and condition are a testimony to the care it received.
