Details
Fujio Yoshida was an accomplished oil painter and watercolorist when she married the artist Hiroshi Yoshida in 1907. Yoshida traveled with her husband to the U.S. in the early part of the 20th century. They held joint art exhibitions and worked side-by-side painting the important natural and cultural treasures they visited—all executed in the field, utilizing the technique of plein air painting. Abroad, Yoshida's original work sold as well as her husband's artwork, and she primarily focused on painting.
This original watercolor work showcases a stunning composition with a towering Mt. Fuji executed in astonishing realism. A figure dressed in traveler’s clothes appears on a path. The figure is rendered in a manner that makes it ambiguous if the traveler is approaching the viewer or moving away toward the majestic mountain. The path cuts through an opening of a forest which appears to lead directly to Mt. Fuji herself. The work is extraordinarily well executed with a masterful sense of light and color. Mt. Fuji, the composition’s main character, appears lifelike, with almost photographic realism.
Connoisseur's Note
Original work by Fujio Yoshida is exceedingly rare. Although she traveled and worked side by side with her husband painting out in the field, she was apparently not as prolific of an artist as her husband, resulting in a fraction of the work her husband produced. This original watercolor work is signed by the artist at the lower-left corner in the artist's distinctive signature found on both her watercolors and oils.
