Details

In this print, a gray starling clutches onto a tree branch as a late fall wind howls. The bird's awkward pose and plumage demonstrate the strength of the wind and the starling's resilience amidst it. Koson elects to depict the bird in detail with fine lines delineating its intricate feathers, while the angular tree branch, cutting through the composition, and its leaves are awash in tones of gray. Bokashi, or color gradation, rendered in darker tones of gray, highlights the wind's potency in the vertical lines of rain and wind, as well as the design itself.

Connoisseur's Note

This particular impression is noteworthy for its visible wood grain in the background accompanied by a dramatic bokashi, or color gradation, throughout the composition.

The print has never been framed or displayed for extended periods. As a result, it is in an outstanding state of preservation.
