Details
Clifton Karhu draws our attention to a narrow corridor lined with traditional wooden structures. The scene is set in the early evening nearing nightfall with a dark overcast sky. Shadows disperse throughout the scene like a kaleidoscope, deepening the colors they touch as the light of day trails to the furthest points of the composition. The bare trees at the end of the street, neatly manicured in late January or February, anticipate the nearing spring. Kurashiki is a city on Japan's Seto Inland Sea. It's known for the centuries-old buildings and shops of the Bikan Historical Quarter. Many first-time visitors find it similar to Kyoto, the artist's adopted home. Perhaps this similarity drew Karhu to visit this local and memorialize the encounter.
Connoisseur's Note
This impression is in an exceedingly fine state of preservation. The print's colors are as fresh and vivid as the day the work was executed. It's quite rare to find oversized prints, such as this one, in excellent condition, as the vast majority of these prints suffered from poor framing practices and light exposure.
